A fever fit, or febrile seizure, is a convulsion in a child triggered by a fever, often due to an infection. These seizures usually happen in young, healthy children with typical development and no prior neurological issues.
We understand how scary it can be to witness your child experiencing a febrile seizure. But take heart: these seizures are generally harmless, last only a few minutes, and rarely signal a serious health problem.
What Are the Symptoms?
During a febrile seizure, your child may:
• Lose consciousness.
• Shake or jerk their arms and legs.
• Occasionally get stiff or twitch in just one area of the body.
• Have a fever above 38.0°C.
Febrile seizures are divided into two types:
• Simple Febrile Seizures are the most common type, lasting a few seconds to 15 minutes. They don’t happen more than once every 24 hours and affect the whole body.
• Complex Febrile Seizures: These are less common. They last longer than 15 minutes, may occur more than once in 24 hours, or are limited to one side of the body.
Febrile seizures often occur within the first 24 hours of a fever and can even be the first clue that your child is unwell.
What to Do If Your Child Has a Seizure
When a seizure happens, the most important thing is to stay calm and act quickly. Here’s how you can help:
1. Don’t panic! We know it’s easier said than done, but staying calm helps you think clearly and support your child. Take a few deep breaths.
2. Ensure their safety. If your child is on a raised surface, gently lower them to the floor. Immediately lift them out if they’re in water, such as a bathtub.
3. Turn them onto their side. This prevents choking if anything is in their mouth. Important: Never put your fingers or any object into their mouth!
4. Remove other children from the room. This helps reduce stress and keeps everyone safe.
5. Seek medical care. Once the seizure ends, take your child to a doctor or clinic to be checked.
6. Call an ambulance immediately if the seizure:
o Lasts longer than fifteen minutes.
o Is accompanied by vomiting, a stiff neck, breathing difficulties, or extreme drowsiness.
